Marcel Dzama.

This article I have read for our discussion on Thursday 11th May is about a Canadian artist, born with dyslexia. His name is Marcel Dzama, who expresses his art movements through a variety of mediums since childhood at school.

His work has been highly recognisable with diverse number of clients from around the world. Most of his illustrations include sketches of imaginative child like characters. Dzama’s work shows a contemporary art style.  The artist has had words in various mediums including pen, ink and watercolour.

What I really like from looking at Dzama work is his colourful illustrations and the vibrant coloured patterns. I also admire the large-scale murals where his depictions of different style versions of ideas such as fantasy artwork of the bat. His cartoon style of drawing figures and the use colours are reminiscent of children’s books. In addition I also like the fantasy like sculptures, he combine different elements together to create new unworldly characters.  In the artist work I didn’t particularly enjoy the theatrical films as much.

Esther Watson.

Esther was born in Los Angeles; her father who created a giant flying saucer for her as a child inspires her work. The artist work takes those memories in to her painting in different ways including mixed media pieces that show a charm-full and nostalgic style. The giant flying saucer her father built was interpreting future transportation. While the artist saw it as a work of art that influenced her work she also took inspiration from Douglas Curran’s books.

Watson then started painting from memory and her work depicts a sweet-natured landscape with the flying saucer made of recycled aluminium litter as well as matchstick characters.

The artist has also worked on different styles such as inside and outside folk art. She often works by painting the same memory over and over. In addition she paints these memories with an idealised lens, which explains, a child like past.

Overall I am not that inspired by Esther style of painting. She does not include any detail or depth and in my opinion look simplistic. One element I do like is her use of vibrant colour.
